    EFFECT OF TWO VARIETIES OF MALUS DOMESTICA (APPLE) EXTRACT ON SERUM LIPID PROFILE IN HYPERCHOLESTEROLEMIC ALBINO RATS.

    The effect of two varieties of Malus domestica extracts namely; Red delicious and Golden delicious were studied on hypercholesterolemic induced albino Wistar rats. One hundred and thirty two albino Wistar rats of either sex weighing between 150 -250g were randomly divided into two batches, A and B for red and golden delicious apple extract administration respectively. Batch A was further divided into 6 groups of 12 rats each and Batch B into 5 groups of 12 rats each. Hypercholesterolemia was induced by intraperitoneal administration of pure cholesterol (Merck) 1ml/kg in all the animals except in control group. Batch A animals were treated as follows: Group I received distilled water and served as control, group II received cholesterol only; group III, IV, V and VI received cholesterol with 100,200,400 and 800mg/kg body weight red delicious extract orally for 21 days. The same dose of extract and procedure was repeated for Batch B animals except that golden delicious extract replaced red delicious extract. After the treatment, total Cholesterol, Triacylglycerol, HDL and LDL level in serum were analyzed using standard methods. Total WBC, PCV and Hb concentrations were determined. AST, ALP, ALT, Bilirubin, Creatinine and Urea levels were also estimated. Statistical significance between treated and control groups was analyzed using One-way ANOVA, followed by student’s ‘t’ Test where P<0.05 was considered significant. The extracts showed a significant (P<0.05) decrease in total Cholesterol when compared with the control. Haematological analyses indicate a significant increase (p<0.05) in PCVand Hb levels and significant (P<0.05) decrease in Total WBC in the extract treated rats when compared with the control. The elevated levels of AST, ALP, ALT, Bilirubin, Creatinine and Urea decreased significantly (P<0.05) when compared with the control. This study established that the red and golden delicious variety extracts of Malus domestica show significant antihypercholesterolemic activity in cholesterol induced hypercholesterolemia and therefore maybe used as an antihypercholesterolemic agent.
