While, I do not take it for granted, I crave your indulgence to tolerate my passion and, possibly, sentiments, for the subject, I have chosen to discus, which is "Extinction of Flora and Fauna and Deteriorating Ecosystem versus Preservation of Man's Habitat: The Role of the Law". Mr Chairman, as has already been pointed out, I was belatedly; given a full professorial chair taking effect from October 2012, having been an Associate Professor of Environmental Law for 5 years. This elevation makes me, by the special grace of God and to the best of my knowledge, the first Professor of Environmental Law in Nigeria and also the first indigenous full Professor ofLaw in the entire Ebonyi State. Mr Chairman, I know the issue of going back to green culture. and sound environment is one. of the major policy-thrusts of the. administration of our dear Governor, Engr. Dave Umahi Nweze; that is why I am particularly happy that some members of the State Executive Council (EXCO) are here, led by His Excellency the Governor, together with other relevant state officials from the 3-arms of • Government. I will speak on vital issues that would, by His grace, benefit this administration, and the entire nation. For the less informed, an inaugural lecture, inter alia, marks in the life of a professor, a once-in-a-life-time academic ritual which he is required to perform on appointment or thereafter, to jus:fv his in-depth academic prowess in that area of study. Ogbu, OFRIn Nigeria, sixty five (65) infants out of every 1,000 live births die between one and twelve months of age according to the United Nations Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF) report on "The State of the World's Children 2017".Although there may be no accurate statistical data on infant deaths in Nigeria in line with the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), it is reasonable to assume that a number of these infant deaths, perhaps as many as 0.5-1 per 1,000 live births, will have no identifiable cause of death even after thorough investigations including post mortem examination, review of medical history and examination of the death scene. Sudden unexpected death of infants occurs world-wide and has been with man throughout history. Identification of the cause or causes of death in these cases has remained an enigma and a diagnostic challenge to the clinicians and medical examiners. It has generated very intensive and extensive research efforts over many decades and across the world. In 1974 the American Congress passed a bill to set up diagnostic centers throughout the country and the National Institute of Child Health and Development allocates more than half a million dollars annually for SIDS research. Nomenclature and Definitions: The diagnostic nomenclature for these sudden and unexpected deaths has undergone several changes over the decades. The term Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS ) was originally used to classify all such deaths of infants in the United States of America and Europe. They were also called COT or CRIB deaths in Europe signifying the location of death. Introduction I do not actually know whether to call this an inaugural or a valedictory lecture. However, it has been decided that this is the 17 Inaugural Lecture of Ebonyi State University entitled: Transforming English Teacher Education in Nigeria to Meet Current Global Imperatives. And so it is. We shall therefore, look at education generally, teacher education, and finally address current global imperatives before we conclude by highlighting some of my major contributions to academics. We will focus on English teacher education before examining the inter-relatedness of all the variables. But for us to use the word "transforming" it means that there is already a noticeable gap which needs to be filled. This is going to be the main purpose of this lecture. It is generally accepted that teachers constitute the pivot of any school
